Netherlands Student Visa

Netherlands Student Visa

Student Visa — The MVV and Residence Permit

Entry Procedure for Non-EEA Students

For Indian, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi, and Nepali students, the entry process has two stages:

  • Stage 1 — MVV Application (for stays longer than 90 days): The Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf (MVV) is a long-stay visa. The university arranges the MVV application on behalf of the student through the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND).
  • Stage 2 — Residence Permit (Verblijfsvergunning) on Arrival: Upon arriving, the student collects their physical card from the university's international office. The university must be registered with the IND as a recognised sponsor.
Financial Requirements

Students must demonstrate financial capacity of approximately €1,000 per month (€12,000 per year) for living costs, in addition to tuition fees. Evidence is typically provided through bank statements, a scholarship letter, or a parental support declaration.

Health Insurance

All students living in the Netherlands for more than 4 months must take out health insurance. Students who work require the standard Dutch public health insurance (approx. €100-€120/month). Non-working students can use international student health insurance.
