Germany Post Study Work Visa

Germany Post Study Work Visa

The 18-Month Job Seeker Visa

After graduating from a German university, non-EU international students can apply for an 18-month job seeker visa (Jobseeker Visum).

This is one of the most generous post-study periods in Europe. It provides ample time to transition from student life to the professional workforce without immediate pressure to secure employer sponsorship.

What You Can Do in 18 Months

  • Remain legally in Germany
  • Work up to 20 hours per week in any job to support your living costs
  • Actively search for a qualified job (one related to your German degree)
  • Access Germany's employment services, including the German Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit)

Transition to Long-Term Work Permits

Once a qualified employment offer is secured, you apply for one of the following main work visas:

EU Blue Card

For graduates earning above the minimum threshold (currently €43,800 per year for most occupations, €34,200 for shortage occupations in IT, engineering, mathematics, and natural sciences).

The Advantage: EU Blue Card holders can apply for permanent residency after just 21 months (with B1 German) or 33 months (without B1 German).

Skilled Worker Visa

For qualified workers with a German degree earning at least the relevant German occupation minimum, but not meeting the EU Blue Card threshold.

The Advantage: Allows long-term residency after 4 years, and permanent residency (Niederlassungserlaubnis) after 4-5 years.

German Permanent Residency Timeline

A student who studies in Germany, then secures employment and an EU Blue Card, can follow this exceptionally fast timeline.

Year 1-2: Study

Student visa / residence permit (Stamp D).

Year 3: Job Search

Graduate and switch to the 18-month Job Seeker Visa.

Year 3-4: Employed

Secure employment and transition to an EU Blue Card.

Year 4.5-5: Permanent Residency

Apply for Permanent Residency (Niederlassungserlaubnis) after 21 months on an EU Blue Card (if you have B1 German), or after 33 months (with lesser proficiency).

Target Germany's PR Pathway

This timeline is comparable to Australia's pathway and significantly faster than most other European countries. Let us help you align your degree with EU Blue Card shortage occupations.
