European Schengen Student Visa

Most non-EU international students require a national long-stay student visa (Type D visa) for the country where they will study.

This is distinct from the Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) which allows up to 90 days for tourism or business. The Type D student visa is issued by the national embassy or consulate of the study country in the student's home country.

Students studying in any Schengen member state hold a residence permit that allows unrestricted travel within the Schengen Area — 27 European countries including Germany, France, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, and more. This creates an experience of living and travelling in Europe that is genuinely different from studying in an isolated English-speaking country.

While exact requirements vary by member state, you will generally need to provide the following documentation to the embassy.

Admission Letter

A formal letter of acceptance from a recognized higher education institution in the destination country.

Financial Capacity

Proof of funds to support your living costs. Varies by country, but typically €700 to €1,000 per month (e.g., German Blocked Account).

Accommodation

Proof of secured accommodation or a valid rental contract for at least the initial period of your stay.

Health Insurance

Mandatory health insurance coverage. Depending on the country, this may be public statutory insurance or an approved private policy.

Passport & History

A valid passport (valid beyond the intended stay) and a clean travel/immigration history.

Local Registration

Upon arrival, students must register with the local municipality to convert the entry visa to a full residence permit.
