Ireland Student Visa

Ireland Student Visa

Irish Student Visa Complete Requirements

Non-EEA (European Economic Area) students studying in Ireland for more than 90 days require an Irish student visa. Students from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan all require a student visa.

For the vast majority of international students from South Asia, the D Study visa is required — this covers degree programs of one year or more at Irish universities and recognised institutions.

Types of Irish Student Visa
Visa Type What It Covers Duration
Study Visa (C Study) Short-term courses — less than 3 months Up to 90 days
Long-Stay Study Visa (D Study) Full courses — more than 3 months Up to 1 year (renewable in Ireland)
Checklist

Core Student Visa Requirements

A successful D Study visa application requires careful preparation of the following key documents.

1. Letter of Offer

An unconditional offer of place from an Irish institution that is state-funded or holds QQI validation. Must state course title, NFQ level, duration, and fees.

2. Financial Evidence

Demonstrate ability to fund tuition plus living costs for the first year. ISD requires evidence of at least €7,000 for living costs, plus evidence of tuition fee payment. Must be shown via consistent bank balances, not recent lump sums.

3. Private Health Insurance

Non-EEA students must hold private health insurance (e.g., VHI, Laya, Irish Life Health). Costs approx €500 to €1,200/year. The public health system (HSE) is not accessible in the first two years.

4. English Proficiency

Most universities require IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall for postgraduate entry (6.5 to 7.0 for law/business/health). The visa doesn't specify a minimum, it is set by the institution.

The Registration Process (GNIB/IRP)

Upon arrival in Ireland with a D Study visa, students must register with the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) or an Immigration Registration Office within 90 days. This registration provides the Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card — confirming your Stamp 2 permission.

IRP Registration Requires:
  • Passport with valid D Study visa entry stamp
  • Letter of registration from the institution confirming enrolment
  • Proof of private health insurance
  • Proof of address in Ireland
  • Registration fee (currently €300 per registration)
